What does sucess look like?

One of the many issues that Barna present in his book is that many parents have the wrong definition of success for their students. The desire that their child would graduate H.S. and get into a good college without being pregnant or addicted to drugs is far short of the Biblical example that we should strive for. So the question I would like to pose and have you respond to is:

“What would ‘success’ look like to you in your child’s life?” Or, “What characteristics do you want to see in your child’s life” and “What are we doing to help them achieve this?” Then… How can we as a ministry help in this process?

Each of my children had, from me, a special prayer that I felt to be theirs personally. But for all 4 of them, the foremost concern was first and that every other part of their lives should come out of that. For one of my sons, the prayer began: “May you love and follow the Lord; may you have a kind and gentle heart; may you be healthy in spirit, body and mind….”

I want my children to be free standing moral agents for God like Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Amy and I came home from Women’s bible study on Daniel tonight and we were both charged up by the stand that these young men took in the face of a fiery death. Amy’s comment to me was that one of her favorite verses in the Bible is when these young men say in Dan. 3:17-18, “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us…but even if He does not, …we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image…” That’s what success looks like to me.
